Wordle without words

No vocabulary does not mean no prior knowledge

A map outline removes spelling as the main challenge, but knowing where countries are still helps. A movie still replaces a word with a recognition test. Choose these if the subject is part of the fun; choose numbers or character pieces if you want less reliance on trivia.

Numbers: use constraints instead of a dictionary

Nerdle asks you to reason about an equation. A guess has to make arithmetic sense, so the position of an operator can narrow the possibilities before the feedback arrives. The official site offers several number-puzzle variants; do not assume every mode has identical rules or access.

Mastermind and Bulls and Cows: count matches, then locate them

Classic code-breaking games separate two questions: which symbols occur in the answer, and where do they belong? A matching-position count answers part of that question; a wrong-position count tells you that other submitted symbols are present elsewhere. Unlike Wordle’s individual tiles, these totals usually do not identify which submitted symbol earned each match.

For a simple three-digit example with no repeated digits, a guess of 123 against 312 has zero exact matches and three misplaced matches. That tells you the digits are right but all three positions are wrong. It does not tell you whether the answer is 231 or 312. Your next guess can test those remaining arrangements. This is an illustrative code puzzle, not a Meikyu floor or today’s answer.

Before choosing a version, check its code length, symbol set and whether repeats are allowed. Those details change which guesses are valid. Meikyu instead reports feedback at the piece positions in a five-slot formation, then adds relationships between residents; a strategy that assumes an unrestricted numeric code cannot be copied unchanged.

Pieces: learn from the response to your guess

Dungleon and Meikyu use character pieces rather than word lists. This is the closest branch here to keeping Wordle’s position-based feedback while changing the material. Hidden rules add another question: which combinations can occur at all?

In Meikyu, a green ring marks a correct piece and position, a gold ring marks a piece elsewhere on the floor, and a gray cross marks an absent piece. The interface and codex still contain text, localized in fifteen languages. You do not need to spell a valid word to submit a lineup.

Maps and movie stills: a different kind of challenge

Worldle uses an outline plus distance and direction clues. Framed asks you to identify a movie. Both can be appealing alternatives to spelling games, but neither should be described as requiring no knowledge or no reading.

If you want to keep playing after a win

Meikyu gives you six tries per floor, not six tries for the entire day. A win lets you descend again within your version’s limits; a failed floor gets a new puzzle the next day. Your progress determines your floor, so players do not all receive one identical daily lineup.

The browser version is free through floor 19, with two additional descents and three training runs per local day. On iOS, floors 1–19 are free; the one-time Abyss Pass unlocks floor 20 and beyond. The app also supports offline play and iCloud sync.
