Puzzle games with hidden rules
Discovering an unstated rule, changing a stated rule, and learning how a world works are different pleasures. The Witness, Baba Is You, Outer Wilds and small deduction games explore different parts of that space. Choose according to the discovery you want, not just the label “hidden rules”.
We make Meikyu, the dungeon puzzle discussed below. It is a small feedback-based game, not a substitute for a full exploration adventure.
Learning rules from examples
In a game such as The Witness, understanding what a puzzle symbol asks of you is part of solving it. The attraction is forming an explanation and testing it against another example. This differs from knowing the instructions and looking for a clever sequence of moves.
Changing rules: Baba Is You
Baba Is You makes rules into movable blocks. Rearranging them changes how the level works. That is rule manipulation: the words are visible, and the puzzle is how to use them. It is a different reason to play from uncovering a fixed rule that was not explained.
Learning a world: Outer Wilds
Outer Wilds is an exploration mystery in a solar system caught in a time loop. Choose it for investigating places and connecting discoveries across a larger world. Its scope and pace differ substantially from a compact daily guessing game.
Learning from guesses: Meikyu
Meikyu hides relationships among dungeon residents. You arrange five slots, inspect the feedback and use what you have learned on later floors. Your codex records discoveries; it is not a requirement to arrive already knowing every rule.
Six tries apply to each floor. When you win, you can continue that day within the limits of your version. A failed floor receives a fresh puzzle the next day. You do not have to wait overnight after every successful experiment.
The browser version is free through floor 19, with two additional descents and three training runs per local day. On iOS, floors 1–19 are free; the one-time Abyss Pass unlocks floor 20 and beyond. The app also supports offline play and iCloud sync.
Choose the scale of discovery
Choose rule manipulation if you want to change what a level allows, exploration if you want a larger mystery, or Meikyu if you want short rounds of lineup deduction. These games share an interest in understanding, but their length, controls and payment models are not interchangeable.
Questions
Are hidden-rule games and rule-changing games the same?
No. Hidden-rule puzzles ask you to infer how a system works. Rule-changing puzzles let you alter that system. A game may involve both, but the distinction helps explain what you will actually do.
Must I wait until tomorrow to test another idea in Meikyu?
Not after every win. A successful floor lets you continue within your version’s limits. The web version allows two additional descents per local day and stops at floor 19. A failed floor gets a new puzzle the next day.
